Jeg har været en del af Vocal Line siden en smuk sommerdag i august 1997. Da jeg her små 13 år senere overvejede hvad jeg skulle blogge om, nåede jeg frem til den konklusion at blandt alle de ting jeg har været med til sammen med Vocal Line er der intet større end at give publikum verden over en musikalsk oplevelse der var ulig alle andre de havde haft – eller forventede at få.

Da jeg kun havde hørt koret synge koncert en enkelt gang før jeg kom med, var jeg ikke klar over dette i begyndelsen. Men selvom det tog mig et lille stykke tid at forstå hvad Vocal Line i bund og grund drejede sig om, fik jeg en fornemmelse af hvad der kunne være muligt i fremtiden.

Siden 2004 har jeg haft mit kamera med mig overalt hvor Vocal Line har været, hvad enten det er i studiet, backstage til kæmpestore festivalkoncerter, i turbussen eller stort set alle andre steder. Du har sikkert set nogle af dem på websitet allerede. Da jeg nåede frem til konklusionen om at Vocal Line tilbød publikum noget unikt, kom jeg straks til at tænke på et foto som jeg tog for fem år siden i Taipei. Ikke fordi det på nogen måde er et teknisk fremragende foto, snarere tværtimod; for mig symboliserer det bare alt det der er godt ved Vocal Line.

Fotoet ovenfor er fra en optræden vi gav efter en af vores koncerter i Taipei. Man kan mærke den respons vi fik fra det mestendels lokale publikum. De var fuldstændig vilde og entusiastiske på en måde som vi ikke tidligere havde oplevet før og bad om autografer og fotos. Når man kommer fra Danmark hvor publikum kan være noget reserverede sine steder, så var det for mange af os som om vi havde nået det største af mange højdepunkter i Vocal Lines historie indtil da.

Her er lidt baggrund: lige siden vores europæiske turné i 1997 havde vi udnyttet enhver mulighed for at promovere vores unikke form for vokal musik og samtidig også søgt ny inspiration overalt hvor vi kom frem. Frisk fra min audition og med kun få ugers øvning i rygsækken fik jeg mit første glimt af hvad det var Vocal Line kunne tilbyde publikum. Vi deltog i en korkonkurrence i Riva del Garda i Italien. Selvom vi ikke vandt konkurrence gik det alligevel op for mig at ingen andre kor lod til at gøre hvad vi prøvede på. Samtidig var der ingen tvivl i mit sind om at vi nåede et publikum der var vant til at høre klassisk kormusik, gospelkor eller små vokalgrupper der gjorde der bedste for at kombinere a cappella med visuel komik. Vi var anderledes.

I 1999 vendte vi tilbage til Italien og en af de ting jeg især kan erindre var den modtagelse vi fik fra et stort tysk ungdomskor efter vores konkurrencekoncert. Da vi kom ned fra scenen stod de tæt pakket omkring en bred trappe backstage, mens de klappede og tiljublede os med ansigterne oplyste af ren og skær glæde. Det var ikke noget vi havde set før og da vi talte med dem opdagede vi at vi havde opnået det vi havde sat os som mål: vi havde vist dem hvad moderne a cappella musik er i stand til når det bliver fremført af en stor gruppe. Hvad mere er, jeg er sikker på at vi viste dem en ny vej frem.

Vi havde flere af disse oplevelser i de følgende år. Hver gang jeg talte med nogle publikummer eller folk der havde købt vores cd'ere fik jeg den samme fornemmelse fra dem som jeg har fået i Italien og det gjorde mig inderligt glad hver gang. Som jeg mindede min kolleger i Vocal Line om efter en veloverstået koncert: "Jeg er slet ikke færdig med at blive tilbedt!"

Så i 2005 blev vi inviteret til at synge til "7th World Symposium on Choral Music" i Kyoto, Japan og til "6th International Choir Festival" i Taipei, Taiwan. Dette skulle være kulminationen på mange års hårdt arbejde, især af vores utrættelige musikalske leder, Jens Johansen. Vi havde tidligere uden succes forsøgt at rejse midler til en tur til Busan, Sydkorea i 2002 for at deltage i den tredje korolympiade så vi var naturligvis meget spændte på at skulle til Asien for første gang i vores historie.

Når jeg ser tilbage så var 2005 på mange måder et vendepunkt for os. Aldrig før havde vi rejst så meget og så langt. At står øverst på plakaten til Vocal Jazz Summit i Mainz, Tyskland i fornemt selskab med Take 6, The Real Group og the New York Voices var fantastik – at blive modtage som rockstjerner i Taipei var simpelthen utroligt! Siden har vi nået nye højdepunkter og et nyt, bredere publikum med det er jo en helt anden historie.

At være med i Vocal Line betyder at man optræder på alle tænkelige scener. Hvis dit ego er blevet en smule for stort til dit hoved af at optræde med Bobby McFerrin foran 2000 mennesker eller af at underholde hele landet på landsdækkende TV, bare rolig – du vil snart skulle synge for 50 mennesker i en landsbykirke i et fjerne hjørne af Danmark! Men det sjove er at jeg stadig føler at vi – lige meget hvor vi synger og ligegyldigt hvem publikummet er – altid når nogle nye mennesker derude, nogen som ikke havde nogen ide om at stemmer kunne det som vi gør. Og det er derfor billedet ovenfor af Jens Johansen, midt i et hav af begejstrede mennesker der lytter til a cappellaens magi, for mig repræsenterer hvad Vocal Line handler om.
